Mission
The protection of life and property through the issuance of appropriate weather forecasts and warnings for St. Maarten and adjacent waters and air space. And to provide meteorological and climate services to specific sectors in order to sustain social-economic development.
Vision
To be a world-class meteorological center providing excellent services.
Core Tasks :
• For ensuring a continuous and uninterrupted observation of meteorological and climatic events and phenomena including at least making observations on the surface and upper air and the timely dissemination of data, also as part of this, from treaties, obligations;
• Caring for observing or gathering information relevant to other facts and geophysical phenomena;
• Explaining his own observation data verification in a permanently climatic records;
• The publication of regular data and information on the weather occurred in the form of a generally available climatological summary pertaining to St. Maarten. This list is minimum available per calendar month and calendar year;
• The responsibility of the regular preparation and publication of the general weather that not made available to the community through public media and public communication channels;
• Responsibility for issuing hurricane and storm official warnings and warnings concerning other hazardous weather and geophysical conditions. These warnings are part of the general weather forecasting;
• Responsible for the regular preparation and publication of marine-meteorological information and warnings for ports and shipping in the inland and coastal waters surrounding sea areas of St. Maarten;
• Providing PMO services (Port Meteorological Office) seafarers, who voluntarily contribute in the provision and transmission of meteorological observations at sea;
• Responsible to provide and keep available other meteorological, climatic and geophysical data, which the Minister in the country deem important.
• Maintaining the technical infrastructure, including measuring instruments, the meteorological and climate monitoring network, data communication, data storage and information systems necessary to implement the tasks as described;
• Responsible for security of vital social service Meteorological data and information to ensure the availability, exclusivity and integrity thereof;
• Conduct research in the field of meteorology, climatology and other geophysical areas to increase knowledge, improve operational processes, verification and increase the reliability of expectation and forecasting of weather and climate affect on the socio- economic development and safety of society (The results are publicly accessible);
• The country will participate based on the country membership in international organizations in meteorology, climatology and other geophysical fields and meets the associated obligations;
• Make proposals to the Minister concerning the implementation of national and international policy in the field of meteorology, climatology and other geophysical fields and advises the Minister in respect of the applicable laws and regulations;
• Provide upon request, or a regular basis, Meteorological Service data, information and advice to others other than the country;
• To provide, whether or not on a regular basis, services including special research to others other than the country;
• The Minister shall determine the conditions applicable to the latter two tasks regarding the services provided by the Meteorological Service and the basis for the calculation of the service fee provided to the recipient of the data. It is based on the integral cost of providing the data or information or the provision of services.
