Miguel de Weever

Mr. Miguel de Weever is an Economist by profession who obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami in December 1993, majoring in Economics. Thereafter, Mr. de Weever graduated with his Master’s degree in Economics, specializing in Economic Development, from Howard University in Washington, D.C. in June 1997 and started his career with the Island Government of St. Maarten,
In August 1997, as a staff member/policy advisor of the then Department of Commerce & Economic Development.
In April 1999, Mr. de Weever became the Head of the Department of Economic Policy & Research. In November 2002 until Feb. 2004, Mr. de Weever served as Full-time Acting Sector Director of Economy & Tourism.
As of August 1st, 2006, he has been appointed as Sector Director of Economy & Tourism. The function of Acting Sector Director of Economy & Tourism entails the management and supervision of four departments in government namely,
a) The Department of Economic Policy & Research
b) The Department of Tourism, the
c) The Department of Licenses, Permits and Economic Controllers
d) The Department of Control, Inspection, and Security.
In the Fall Semester 1997 – August 2000, he served as adjunct professor of Economics at the University of St. Maarten.
July 1998-1999. Mr. de Weever served as a member of the Supervisory Board of Directors of the St. Maarten Port Authority (SMPA).
Mr. de Weever serves and has functioned on various committees and/or work groups for the continued development of St. Maarten such as, amongst others:
1. Chairman Work Group, Ministry of Economy, Tourism, Transportation & Communication
2. Member of the Social Economic Initiative (SEI) Steering Committee Former Chairperson Member of the Committee of Experts
3. Former Chairperson of the Tax Holiday Committee
4. Served as Chairperson of the Joint Labor Summit Committee
5. Served as Former Chairman of the Public Transportation Committee
6. Served as Chairperson of Driver’s License Workgroup
7. Served as Chairman of the Tax Base Workgroup
8. Served as Chairman of the Relief Task Force
9. Served as Coordinator/Project Leader of the Economic Diversification Study
10. Served as Member of the Tourism Master Plan Steering Group
11. Member of various inter-governmental workgroup and/or committees
Mr. de Weever’s community related activities involve serving as
1) Former Vice President of Education for the Soualiga Toastmasters’ Club
2) Member & Competent Communicator/Competent Leader of the Soualiga Toastmasters’ Club
3) Former President and current Vice-president of the PSD Investment Club
4) President & Coach of Softball Team
5) President & Coach Basketball Team
6) He served as Public Relations Officer for the St. Maarten Basketball Association
7) Served as co-host of a popular TV program entitled “Inside Politics”.
