Based on the latest weather information at 5:00 AM on Saturday from the Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten (MDS) regarding the passing of Tropical Storm Fiona, the Prime Minister as Chairlady of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), that Tropical Storm Fiona will continue to impact Sint Maarten for the rest of the morning with rain and storm gusts of wind. As such a flood advisory has been issued.
The MDS, EOC will continue to monitor the weather situation and advise the Government on the best course of action to ensure that the best decisions are made in the interest of the safety of all.
Excessive rain and strong gusts will continue Saturday morning, and therefore it is highly recommended for persons to remain indoors, allowing for authorities to assess the situation especially in flood prone areas. As tropical storm conditions prevail, the population should remain indoors until further notice.
All businesses are to remain closed until further notice.
At 5:00 AM, Tropical Storm Fiona was located approximately 110 miles south of Sint Maarten. On its present track, according to the Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten, Fiona is at its closest point to the country.
Residents are asked not to underestimate the effects of excessive rainfall which can be dangerous and cause loss of life in flooding situations.
The country remains under a Tropical Storm Warning. As such the population is urged to continue to remain indoors. Authorities will continue to assess the need for a curfew as the morning progresses and update accordingly.
