The government of St. Maarten has mandated that if a study can be done locally, students will be sent to the University of St. Martin for the first two years of study (Associate Degree)*. Thereafter, the Netherlands Antilles, Aruba, Holland, Tallahassee, and other areas.
*All Elementary Education students must attend and complete the program at USM.
Students completing the VSBO level on the island will have to follow SBO courses locally, in Curacao or Aruba where possible.

There are many institutions in Holland offering programs in the Dutch and English Language. Due the availability of affordable student housing students are advised to choose a school in the big cities, Amsterdam. Rotterdam, Den Haag, Tilburg, Leiden etc.

Tallahassee
The Government of St. Maarten has entered into a sister city agreement with the city of Tallahassee. This means that government sponsored students can attend universities in Tallahassee at the rate of a resident of that city (in-state tuition).
