In 2010, the Department of Labor Affairs spearheaded an initiative called the Social Economic Initiative Employability through Training Project (SEI ETTP). This project was designed to offer unskilled and unemployed individuals the opportunity to sharpen their employability skills and in some cases gain sustainable employment. In 2014 this project came to an end; however, the Department thought it necessary to incorporate the best practices of this project into the regularly functioning Section Labor Market, inclusive of the working procedures forged with the Department of Social Services.
This sentiment birthed the idea of approaching local businesses to partner with the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor, under the auspices of the Department of Labor Affairs, with the intention to train suitable persons across various business sectors. Each business draws up and signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which stipulates the conditions and terms under which the training will take place. They then become participating partners in the Labor Affairs Training Program (LATP). Thus far several businesses have partnered with the Department, in terms of offering training to potential employees and job seeking clients.
