On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, the entire newly appointed Council of Ministers (CoM) of Sint Maarten, alongside the Minister Plenipotentiary and his Deputy, participated in an informative presentation by Maria van der Sluis-Plantz, the current Councilor of the State for the Kingdom representing Sint Maarten. This session was an integral component of the Leadership Excellence through R.I.S.E. (Relationship Building, Insight, Skills, and Empowerment) Onboarding Program, aimed at providing comprehensive knowledge of the governance structure of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, thereby preparing them optimally for their roles.
The presentation by Councilor van der Sluis-Plantz provided a thorough examination of the overarching structure, shedding light on its various governing bodies such as the Kingdom Government, the Supreme Court (Hoge Raad der Nederlanden), and the High Councils of State, among others. Special emphasis was placed on the esteemed Council of State of the Kingdom, an institution with a rich history dating back to 1531.
Councilor van der Sluis-Plantz's pivotal role ensures robust representation of Sint Maarten's interests within the Kingdom. Actively engaged in the Council's deliberations, she advocates for the needs and priorities of Sint Maarten, as well as other Caribbean constituents of the Kingdom.
Furthermore, the presentation delved into the ongoing political dynamics within the Netherlands and its relationship with the European Union (EU). Sint Maarten, as an Overseas Country and Territory (OCT), enjoys a distinctive political cooperation and commercial partnership with the EU, bolstering its strategic position within the region.
The onboarding session also served as preparation for the courtesy visit by the delegation of the Permanent Committee of Kingdom Relations of the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament, taking place later that morning. This ensured that the ministers were well-equipped to engage in informed discussions during the visit.
The Council of Ministers remains steadfast in its commitment to equip its leaders with the requisite skillset and knowledge to govern effectively.
